Junior Tennis Championships 2013

DTSC Junior Tennis Championships 2013

The Junior Club Championships were held in 3 stages this year, with the mini tennis events taking place on two Saturday’s in June, and the older ones playing over the first weekend in July.

Entries were not at their highest as all the players are so busy doing other things!

The 8 & under Red Ball tournament, saw 8 boys and 1 girl battling it out.  Their scoring system is one 10 point tie-break per match. A round robin style tournament was played, so each player had about 6 matches.  The final was between Bradley Bennett and Nathaniel Skinner, with Bradley coming out as Champion winning 10 points to 6 in a closely contested match.  Both players were presented with medals.

The 9 & under Orange ball tournament, was missing the majority of the top players, but this didn’t detract from the standard of play, and Noah Jarvis-Woodbridge took full advantage, destroying anyone that got in his way, resulting him in being named as the Orange Ball Club Champion for 2013.

The 10 & under’s play Green Ball tennis on a full size court, but using slightly lower compression balls, and with a scoring system using sets to 4 instead of 6 games.  Six players took part with everyone playing 3 matches each.  Charlie Barnett and Miles Quick soon established themselves as the ones to beat and sure enough they met in the final.  The quality of tennis played by these two boys is very high. Charlie is now competing at national level and is improving all the time.  Miles pushes Charlie close, but this time it was Charlie who won and was crowned under 10 champion 2013.  At this level the girls still compete alongside the boys, so a special mention must go to Gabby Bennett who has been the only girl in her age group for a couple of years, and in this, her final green tournament, she played her best tennis and finished up in a very creditable 3rd place.

In the Boys 12 & under Tournament Oska Atkinson managed to have two extremely long matches, winning the first in a 14 -12 final set tie break against Ellery Ford, but lost the semi final 10-8 in the deciding tie break to Charlie Barnett.  Charlie, the 10 & under champion, was playing up an age group in the 12’s, and lost in a closely fought final to 11 year old Joe Albon, who played some very mature tennis to defeat a scampering Charlie.

The Boys 14 & Under was won by Will Morgan, who demonstrated a more mature attitude and temperament than he is usually known for. He defeated the top two seeds, firstly Nick Brown, and secondly Alex Baker and was awarded the cup for 14 & under player.  Well done Will, a great improvement!

The boys 16’s & 18’s were combined this year due to lack of numbers and the Men’s Club Champion, Ben Skidmore, showed his superior strength to beat 14 year old Nick Brown in the final.

The Girls championship had only a few entrants due to a reluctance from girls in general when it comes to competition.  Only the A tournament was played and this meant that 11 year old Emily Noel competed against 15 year olds, Kayleigh Budge and Sophie Easterbrooke in a round robin format. Kayleigh defended her crown successfully winning against both girls fairly comfortably.

All the competitions were played in a very fair manner, which impressed the spectators and the coaches involved in running the tournament.  Many thanks to Sarah Skidmore, Kevin Willemse and Connor Townsend for running the events.
