17 players turned out for the WTT trial and luckily the weather, although a bit chilly, was dry and fine for the event.
We had 2 matches in progress:
The Dorchester Devils (Sarah Skidmore, Philipa Fortescue, Alex Gracie and Tim Toogood) took on the Casterbridge Chargers (Ros Clark, Laura Dodington, Guy O'Neill and Adam Lawrence). The Devils won the Men's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles and the Chargers only success was the Women's Singles where Sarah Skidmore had got the Devils into a seemingly unassailable position against first Laura and then Ros - she was 4-0 and 40-15 up when she was substituted by Philipa (every eligible team member had to play in every set) - Ros then fought back from Match Point down to win 5-4! The Devils ran out convincing winners 24 games to 14, despite Guy nailing Sarah on the knee with a smash!
Winners of the 1st Match, the Dorchester Devils - Sarah, Philipa, Tim & Alex
On the other court, the Fordington Flyers (Sarah Erickson, Andrea Chambers, Al Clark & Colin Tracy) had a very closely fought match against thePoundbury Pounders (Jenny Warrack, Jo Lacy-Smith, Alison Beaven, Mike Henderson & Grahame Bennett). The Pounders won both singles rubbers on tie-breaks and the Flyers won both doubles rubbers, the Men's on a tie-break, the Women's 5-2, so went into the deciding Mixed Doubles rubber slightly ahead. It was a nail-biting climax, but the Flyers held on to win on a tie-break and take the match overall 22 games to 21.
Winners of the 2nd Match - the Fordington Flyers - Colin, Sarah, Al & Andrea.
As this trial was a success, we may be holding more similar events in future, so keep watching the website.
