HEALTHY CROWDS WITNESS TOURNAMENT ACTION

Squash & Racketball Handicap Tournament 2011

Friday 9th December saw the conclusion of this year’s Dorchester Tennis and Squash Club Annual Squash and Racketball Handicap Tournament.  A healthy crowd was in place to witness the action.

The racketball plate final saw Roger Pinny give Geoff Brazier a single point start on the handicaps and they were rarely separated by much more in this enthralling encounter. Roger took the first game 15-14 with Geoff, far from disheartened, reeling off the next two.  Roger won the fourth taking the match into a tense and nervy final game.  Opening a narrow lead in the crucial game Roger was able to use his experience to see the match out 15-12 and a 3-2 win.

In the main racketball final, club squash number one Stewart Dipple defending his racketball handicap crown took on Graham Francis, with Stewart again showing he is adept with the shorter bat.  Despite a tenacious and hard-working display from Graham, a concerted attack of power and accuracy saw Stewart overcome a sizeable handicap deficit to win 3-0.

The squash plate final had the pace and energy of Nick Watts against the more languid style of Mike Elliott.  Nick was given a 3 point start on the handicaps and took full advantage by extending the points margin in taking the first.  A tighter second saw Nick again come out on top before Mike claimed the third from his young opponent.  This proved a mere consolation as Nick claimed the match 3-1 in the fourth where he raced into a sizeable lead from which Mike could not recover.

The main squash final was contested between Nick Rodgers and Annabel Whalley.  Nick afforded Annabel a 13 point handicap advantage but was able to overcome this, and the vociferous support from the balcony for Annabel, to claim the opening two, tightly contested, games.  Annabel delighted the on-lookers by claiming the third before Nick recomposed himself to narrowly take the fourth and a 3-1 win.
